Oliver Seeds
Oliver Seeds have developed a quality control system which ensures the highest standards available giving optimum establishment, greater freedom from weeds, assured performance & true value.
Oliver Seeds can provide grass seed from fast growing catch crops like Tornado through short and medium term leys such as Broadsword and Javelin to long term and specialist mixtures like DP40 and Dryland. Organic options of some mixtures are available. Forage legumes and wholecrop forage mixtures e.g. peas and barley give a range of choices and Olivers supply the only 42% protein lupin commercially available in the U.K.
There is a wide selection of classic forage crops including fodder beet, swedes, turnips and kale, plus forage rape and stubble turnips and catch crop mixtures such as Rap-tor a mix of Winfred forage rape and Tornado ryegrass. A huge variety of maize seed is available from very early to maincrop and compact to classic. Varieties available include:
Fjord
Fjord is very stable 2nd early with no agronomic weaknesses. Fjord produces exceptional yields of very high quality silage, with excellent fibre digestibility and potentially very high starch content. It is highly adaptable, performing consistently over a wide range soil types, including drought tolerance on light soils, vigour and early cob development on chalks. It is proven across N & W Europe where it is used for both grain & silage. It is misleadingly classified as an earliness class 5 in the NIAB list because of the relatively low dry matter created by it’s stay green character. Cob ripeness is similar to Fabius significantly earlier than Pretti, Schumi, Algans, Diplomat, Wallis & Justina.
Gigant
A classic early forage hybrid with excellent yield potential and good whole plant digestibility. Commercial crops have been excellent throughout the UK over the last three seasons. Gigant performs well in cool springs, it has the best early vigour of any UK recommended variety and produces impressive looking crops. Suited to most maize growing areas of the UK, including marginal sites where it’s vigour boosts performance.
Manatan
An early, compact, maize with good yields of very high grain content, ideal for boosting energy density of forage rations. Suited to farmers feeding below 60% maize or for buffer feeding at grass. Adapted to all maize areas in the UK, Manatan has impressive establishment vigour, very early grain development and excellent ‘stay green', allowing flexibility of harvest date. Incorrectly classified in the NIAB system as a 2nd early, it is similar in grain ripeness to Hudson & Vernal.
Ohio
An exciting high grain hybrid launched in 2002. Ohio combines the starch level and standing power of Manatan with yield nearer to Fjord and earliness of Crescendo & Vernal. Ohio is a uniform, very stable variety with excellent early, full cob development even in cool seasons. Farmers were impressed in 2002. Ohio is also suitable for grain production. It has established a new standard for early grain production in Holland.
